Everybody Say Love
I just read two things that blew my mind. One was yet another response to the Equinox yoga video. You know the one with the adorable girl in a tiny hot yoga outfit being all badass, which for some reason has caused all this stir. It was about how, most modern yogi's don't look like that, and can't we celebrate a different body type for once? Yes, but I think you missed the point sister. We'll get to that in a minute. The other was a collection of vintage ads for weight gain supplements. For ladies. Weight GAIN. Supplements. With which one would gain weight on purpose. Which was supposedly a better time than now. Back then everyone wanted to be Marilyn, but not everybody was so they took weird pills. Now everyone wants to be twiggy but not everyone is so we take wired pills. Frankly I don't see a bit of difference.
How the heck did we get here? Why can't we just let skinny girls be skinny, and curvy girls be curvy? Why are people freaking out over a yoga video, not because the girl is a badass, but because she's a hot badass. Why do people think, oh I'll never look like that so it sucks that they made that and now I feel bad about my self? What the fuck kids?
you know, there are way more problems in the world than what size pants you wear, I mean for real. How lucky are you that you even have the leisure time to fucking care what size pants you have or for that matter that you even have pants!? But I digress. Why does the size or shape of people's bodies matter to you at all? We live in one jacked-up culture. Many people in our country are over weight, many of those are obese. Many of those are so obese that it is killing them. We stuff our bodies with a substance so tortured and stressed and processed, that is fills our bellies and makes us gain weight, but doesn't actually provide us with any of the nutrients we need to live, and yet we call this food. My own family thinks i'm really weird, because i eat "all that health food" and all i do is eat food that grows out of the ground, and doesn't come from a plastic bag or a drive through window. And yet this culture that is so overweight and over-stuffed it's slowly dying, holds the smallest of the small, the so skinny their ribs poke through their skin, up as the perfect ideal. and the part of the population not killing itself slowing with processed cheese food is starving it's self in order to look like that. But what people don't seem to realize is that all bodies have their own unique shape, their own chemistry. Some people are just a size 2 and some people are just a size 12. Some guys are broad shouldered and some are slight. Instead of worrying so much about what size we all are, wouldn't that energy be better spent educating the masses about nutrition? About how to take care of this beautiful gift of a body that you have been given?
So I call you to arms! I call for an end to this! Real women do not just have curves! You don't have to have Marilyn sass to be sexy! Size 0? Size 20? healthy is what matters! Real woman are strong! Strong inside and out! And strong sisters will not let the slight framed among them be singled out as a skinny bitch! We will not secretly seethe in envy when our sisters drop a pants size! We will not assume something is wrong if they go up one either! No! Instead we will take that energy and we will find the skinny among us, that need to eat again and we will find the larger among us that don't know how to take care of their bodies. And we will bring unto them yoga! And kale chips! And love! Love for your self! love for your sisters! love for this gift of this body! this body right here. This shoulder that held your sister up through her divorce. This belly that grew a beautiful baby. These arms that held you up when you would have fallen down. This one. That one. All beautiful. All perfect. All one.
